Discovery of the Raman Effect by Sir C.V. Raman

On 28 February 1928, physicist C.V. Raman and K.S. Krishnan demonstrated the Raman Effect in Kolkata. This breakthrough proved that photons change energy and wavelength when scattered through molecular structures. 28 February is commemorated annually as National Science Day in India.
